Project Access welcomes Melanie Spencer as its new East Coast Program Director where she now oversees 19 Resource Centers at apartment communities across nine states: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. In this all-new role based in Atlanta, Georgia, Melanie will ensure that all family and senior resource centers support positive outcomes on multiple levels for community residents.

Under Melanie’s direction, Project Access Resource Centers will continue to provide tools and opportunities to under-resourced community members so they can stabilize and empower themselves and their households. By being embedded directly into an apartment community, our Project Access Resource Centers allow us to build trust with our residents while also eliminating significant service barriers like transportation, childcare, and cost.

Melanie has over twenty years of experience in nonprofit administration, working with youth and families.  She spent the early part of her career in the for-profit sector and transitioned into human services as a volunteer for a Literacy Program in Westchester, New York. As Director for a Victim Services Program working with people affected by crime, Melanie helped victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and families affected by poverty.

A proud New Yorker by way of Jamaica and Turks & Caicos, Melanie has taught middle and high school for many years, spearheaded a 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school program (transitioning thousands of young people to higher education and viable careers). As a Director for Gateway Academy, she also helped many youths and adults receive scholarship and grant money for continuing their education.

A Board Member for many private and governmental organizations, Melanie has been involved with such organizations as the Yonkers City Planning Council, NYS Education Advisory Council, NYS S.N.U.G. Outreach and the Anti-Gang & Violence Coalition. In 2018, she was selected to become one of the Power of 3:00 Ambassadors for New York State advocating for equitable education and after-school programming. Melanie holds a B.S. in Human Services as well as a Master’s of Public Administration from Metropolitan College of New York.
