2010 Results
In 2010, Project Access provided programs and services to more than 10,000 low-income residents at more than 35 Resource Centers throughout California. Here are some of our successes:
- 2,426 low-income youth received healthy snacks after school
- 2,494 adults participated in employment readiness and job search assistance, financial literacy, parenting education and English as a Second Language programs
- Project Access awarded scholarships to 4 deserving youth to attend college and to 2 adults to further their education
Health
- 1,738 residents attended a Project Access Health Fair to learn more about health resources in their communities, get various health screenings, sign up for health insurance when eligible, and take advantage of other health-related information being distributed
- 99% of respondents reported that they felt more connected with their community due to attending the Project Access Health Fair
- 97% of residents noted they are “much more aware of local resources in their communities” and 93% visited at least 3 resources at the Health Fair
- 1,277 health screenings were administered to residents at the Health Fair, screening them for potential ailments and health issues in order for them to receive preventative treatments and services
After-School Program
- 2,117 youth participated in the After-School Tutoring and Enrichment Program
- 69% of youth improved in their reading grades
- 68% of youth improved in their math grades
- Parent involvement substantially increased across all sites from 2009 to 2010, showing that parents made the effort to meet Project Access staff and stay involved in their children’s lives.
Senior Programs
- 367 seniors participated in at least one social and recreational activity, many participating in over 20 programs throughout the year, on multiple days
- More than half of seniors left their apartment every day to socialize or get exercise
- 100% of surveyed seniors indicated that Project Access has improved the quality of their lives
English as a Second Language
- 440 residents attended a Project Access English as a Second Language class
- 97% of residents indicated that ESL classes improved their ability to speak English
- 86% of residents indicated that ESL classes improved their ability to write English
- 95% of residents indicated that ESL classes improved their ability to read English
- 98% of residents indicated that Project Access ESL Classes had improved their lives
Volunteer Value
- In 2010, 103 volunteers contributed 4,715 hours of service worth $110,425.30, using the Independent Sector’s 2009 estimate of the dollar value of a volunteer hour.
